Qualifications for Running for Office

• Be eligible to vote in Minnesota 
• Must be 21 years of age or older when assuming office
• Have maintained residence in your ward for at least 30 days before the general election

How to File for Office

Candidates for City Council seats must file an Affidavit of Candidacy in person with the City Clerk's office located at City Hall, 112 West Washington Avenue, Fergus Falls, MN 56537. There is a $5.00 filing fee.

2026 Seats Up for Election

• City Council, Ward One, a four-year term
• City Council, Ward Two, a four-year term
• City Council, Ward Three, a four-year term
• City Council, Ward Four, a four-year term

Filing must be completed only during the state approved filing period in order to be placed on the ballot. The 2026 filing period will be open July 14-28.

Filing takes place in person at City Hall Monday-Thursday 8 am-4:30 pm and Friday 8 am-12. Filing closes at 5:00 pm on July 28.

Those who have filed will be on the November 3 General Election ballot.

Each candidate must file a Campaign Finance Report when they receive or expend $750 or more. A final report must be filed regardless of the outcome of the election. Campaign Finance Reports must remain on a city's website for 4 years. View Candidate Filing and Campaign Finance Reports.
