Home MenuHuman Rights Commission
The Fergus Falls Human Rights Commission (HRC) works for the protection of human rights for all people, and helps empower people to realize their rights through education, advocacy and community engagement.
The Fergus Falls Human Rights Commission is committed to creating an inclusive community that values diversity and protects human rights for everyone.
We do this by:
- Conducting educational programming and distributing information in order to help people understand human rights and eliminate discriminatory practices.
- Advising government, businesses, and private individuals on human rights issues, concerns and complaints from the community.
- Informing and advising the Fergus Falls City Council on human rights concerns and complaints.
- Assuming the responsibility to pass on human rights concerns to the Minnesota Department of Human Rights.
Welcoming and Inclusive Communities
The University of Minnesota Extension Center for Community Vitality has developed community readiness assessments and guided programs addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion in rural communities. In early 2023, the City of Fergus Falls, with the support of the Human Rights Commission, received a $10,000 grant from Otter Tail Lakes Country Association to embark on a Welcoming Communities Assessment and Plan. A steering committee and learning cohort will work through the program and assessment throughout 2023 and into 2024. The eight-month program requires participation from seven sectors of the community: schools, health care, law enforcement, business, local government, nonprofit organizations, and religious organizations.
