Appliances

Appliances, also known as white goods, can be disposed of at the Fergus Falls city landfill or at one of Otter Tail County's transfer stations.

Appliances that are accepted include items that have a cord such as refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, toasters, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, copiers, and printers.

Appliances are not accepted in dumpsters and roll-offs

The charge to dispose of these items is $9.00 each for city residents or $13.50 for non-residents.

Small Electronics and Computers

Small electronics would include items that come with a cord including (but not limited to) vacuum cleaners  and kitchen appliances such as toasters or coffee makers.

These devices can be disposed of at the city landfill for a cost of $5.00 each for city residents and $7.50 each for non-residents. 

Computer towers and other components are considered computer scrap.  They can also be disposed of at the city landfill for a cost of $5.00 each for city residents and $7.50 each for non-residents.

TV's and monitors cost $20 each for disposal by city residents and $30 each for non-residents.

These items are also available for disposal at any of Otter Tail County's transfer stations.

Household Hazardous Waste and Paint

Paint, chemicals and other household hazardous waste should never be disposed of in your garbage.   These items are accepted in the Otter Tail County household hazardous waste program.

Items accepted include (but are not limited to) paint, solvents and cleaners, antifreeze, fertilizer and chemicals.

In order to promote reuse and decrease the disposal of usable products that come into household hazardous waste, the county operates a reuse program to give usable products back to the public for free.

Building Materials

Building materials and/or demolition debris can be disposed of at the Fergus Falls city landfill during normal business hours.

Items that are accepted include: (but are not limited to) shingles, lumber, concrete, insulation, windows and glass. 

These items are charged by the cubic yard.  A cubic yard is measured as 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet. One cubic yard is $31.00 for city residents and $46.50 for non-residents.   The charge for a half of a cubic yard is $15.50 for city residents and $23.25 for non-residents.

Construction/demolition materials can be placed in city dumpsters and roll-offs.
Asbestos in any form is not accepted.

Bypass, treated lumber and wood furniture can be disposed for a cost of $31.00 per cubic yard for city residents and $46.50 per cubic yard for non-residents.  The charge for a half of a cubic yard is $15.50 for city residents and $23.25 for non-residents.

Lighting Fixtures

Ballasts and fluorescent lamps are accepted at the Fergus Falls City Landfill. 

The cost for city residents to dispose of fluorescent bulbs is $1.00 each.   The non-resident rate is $1.50 each.
Ballasts are disposed of by the pound for a charge of $1.00 per pound for city residents and $1.50 per pound for non-residents.

Households can dispose of up to ten fluorescent bulbs at the Otter Tail County Recycling Center's Hazardous Household Waste center at no cost.   Businesses should check into the Business Bulbs fee schedule.

Trees, Brush and Yard Waste

Yard and tree waste is accepted at the city landfill during normal business hours.  
There is no charge for residents to dispose of these items.   Non-residents are charged $15 per cubic yard to dispose of these items.

Free wood chips and compost are available for city residents.   If city staff loads the materials for you, there is a $15.00 loading fee.  Loading times are Monday through Friday from 1:00-3:00 pm.  Loading wait times may vary.

An after hours lawn waste/brush disposal site is available near the main landfill gate (please look for signage along S Oak Street) from April-December.

The after hours site is open Monday-Friday from 5-8 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-8 pm.  Please use this area responsibility and only dispose of trees, brush and yard waste at this site.

Prescription Drugs

It is important to dispose of unwanted, or unneeded prescription drugs in a responsible manner.
The Take it to the Box program is available for all county residents.

Instructions

The program is 100% anonymous, no questions asked. Please follow these basic instructions:

• Leave medication in the original container
• Black out or remove your personal information from the label
• Leave the name of the medication on the container
• Drop the medication into the disposal box opening
• Absolutely no syringes, needles, or sharps accepted
• No mercury devices, household chemicals, or biohazardous waste

Mattresses and Couches

Items such as rolled carpet, mattresses, couches, chairs, dressers and other such furniture are referred to as soft goods and they can be disposed of at the Fergus Falls city landfill.   The disposal charge for such items is $31 each for city residents and $46.50 each for non-residents. These items are also accepted as a separate load in city dumpsters and roll-offs. 

Tires

Various sizes of tires are accepted at the city's landfill.
