The Caldecott Award: What Makes a Picture Book Distinguished?

Librarian and former Caldecott Committee member Gail Nordstrom explores picture book art through the lens of the Caldecott Committee, charged to select “the most distinguished American picture book for children.” Gain insight on the artistic elements, media, and style, as well as how picture book design contributes to exemplary works. Participants will apply their newly refined visual literacy skills in pairs to evaluate recent Caldecott Award books. 1.5 CEUs available.

Nordstrom is Public Library Consultant for Viking Library System and served on the 2011 Caldecott Award Committee. She is co-author with Heidi Hammond of Reading the Art in Caldecott Award Books: A Guide to the Illustrations and co-contributor to the “Caldecott Lines of Connections” column in the online magazine Bookology. Nordstrom has co taught graduate level picture book courses for Saint Catherine University and online courses for the American Library Association.
